IFTA - International Fuel Tax Agreement

Should I register for IFTA in my state?

The carriers must register for an IFTA license to operate their qualified motor vehicles in more than one jurisdiction out of their home jurisdiction. A motor vehicle is considered as a qualified vehicle under the following standards:

  • Traveled in at least two or more IFTA jurisdictions
  • Heavy vehicles with three or more axles or used in combination exceeding 26,000 pounds or
    11,797 kilograms.

Qualified Motor Vehicle will not include recreational vehicles unless used for
business purposes.

How do I apply for an IFTA license?

Apply online or download the IFTA License Application. Complete and submit the application to the
Maryland Comptroller.

What fees must I pay under IFTA?

Maryland does not charge any annual renewal processing fee for an IFTA license or IFTA decals. You will need one decal set per qualified vehicle.

What credentials will I receive?

You will receive an IFTA license and a set of decals, which is valid for a year. Each qualified motor vehicle requires a license photocopy to be kept safe in the vehicle. The original license distributed by the bureau should be held at your business address.

IFTA Quarterly Fuel Tax Report

As an IFTA licensee, you have to report how much tax you paid for fuel purchases and distance traveled in each jurisdiction after every quarter. You will balance overpayments in one jurisdiction against amounts owed in other jurisdictions. If the net result is an underpayment, you will send one payment to Maryland. If the net result is an overpayment, you will receive one refund from Maryland.
